Concussion can occur in a range of settings, including sport, falls, motor-vehicle incidents and workplace injuries, and may occur with or without loss of consciousness. Clinical guidelines generally recommend that suspected concussion be assessed by a suitably qualified healthcare professional, and that return-to-activity decisions follow a staged, individualised approach. Research into concussion assessment spans several approaches, including clinical and neurological examination, symptom scales, and objective physiological and neurophysiological measures.
